Stockholm is a cosmopolitan city that has much to offer its visitors, which is why it has no problem attracting so many of them each year. It is a city with a wealth of history and culture and a vibrant restaurant and nightclub scene so there really is something to interest everyone no matter what they are looking for. One thing that every visitor must try though is ice-skating in Stockholm.

Stockholm has many different opportunities for those who want to try out their ice-skating skills. Many are dependant on the weather and only available during the coldest winter months, but there are a few rinks that have mechanical ice and so are open all winter long no matter what the temperatures happen to be. So where should you head to if you want to have a go at ice-skating in Stockholm?

The first place for you to try is the Kungstradgarden in the centre of the city. Here you will find a large ice rink that is open every day of the week during the winter. The opening and closing times can vary, so it is always best to check if you plan to go there for a day. However once there you will find that skate rental is very inexpensive and the staff members will be more than happy to sharpen the blades for you if needed. Then you can get out on the ice and glide around while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Vasaparken is home to a large ice rink that is popular with locals and visitors alike. It never seems to get too crowded though due to its size as it is one of the largest in Stockholm. Again skate rental is very reasonable and the skates are modern and very comfortable. If you are a complete ice-skating novice you may find one or two locals who are happy to give you a few pointers or teach you some new tricks. This is a mechanical ice rink so it does not rely on the weather and is open every day from November through to March.

Just 20 minutes from Stockholm city centre is the Hellasgarden recreation centre. This is a great day out for everyone and not just those who want to try their hand at ice-skating. In the winter you will find an ice-skating rink and you will also be able to have a go at cross country skiing and if you are feeling really daring then you could take a dip in the swimming hole that they cut into the ice. There are snack shops and a restaurant on site so it is perfectly set up for those who want a break from the city and to enjoy the countryside delights for a little while.

There is also the possibility to have a go at ice-skating on frozen rivers and lakes. However the Swedish authorities advise that this should be done as part of an organised group to ensure that everyone stays safe. In fact many Swedish people organise special groups to allow people to try natural ice-skating so enquire at the tourist office for more details. Winter is almost over but if you hurry up you can still catch some frozen lakes. So, book your Stockholm hotel as soon as possible.
