Getting away from life and travelling all over the world can be one of the best ways to stop the daily grind and relax a little. Heading for foreign shores, enjoying long days on beaches, and exploring and discovering new and interesting locations proves a popular attraction for many. There are many things that you should do when you go on holiday, including making sure that you’re fully prepared, that you’ve packed the right clothes and equipment, and that you’ve got all the information you require for your flight and car rental deals. But, there are also a number of things that you should try not to do when you’re on holiday to ensure that you have as hassle free a time as possible.
An important don’t should be considered before you even leave for your holiday and that is to not pack too much stuff. Whether you’re going away for a long weekend or a couple of weeks it can be tempting to pack far too many belongings. You don’t want to be carrying around large quantities of valuables whilst you’re away so try to be as sparing as possible and only take what you’ll really need and use.
When travelling to another country where the language is not your own it is vital that you don’t assume everyone will speak English. Whilst many hotel and service staff may have very good language skills, the majority of people may only have basic knowledge at best. It is therefore important that you take the time to learn at least the simplest phrases for your holiday, helping you get around and understand the basics. It is also a fantastic way to ingratiate yourself to local residents and you will find that people are often more willing to talk and help if they see that you’ve attempted to learn their language.
Apart from language skills there are several important facts to remember in terms of safety. Whilst you may feel perfectly at home on holiday local thieves can easily spot tourists. Your false sense of security may lead you to take risk with belongings that you wouldn’t normally even do at home, and so it is vital to stay vigilant with your valuables. Avoid going on holiday dressed to the nines in all your best branded, high-end, fashion and accessories. Glitzy watches and jewellery and obvious fashion from the likes of Prada and Gucci will make you an instant target for thieves, and even if you’re wearing all of the high-end garments you own, a thief may stop at nothing to try and rob you. Meanwhile, avoid splashing your cash around and making it obvious that you have money to steal. Fanny packs can be a great way of storing belongings when you’re on the move, but they are an obvious target for thieves. Where possible utilise trousers with zips in them to store your wallet or purse as this will be far more subtle than a fanny pack.
Finally, never leave your hotel without taking one of their business cards. This will allow you to contact them in case of emergency and could offer an important lifeline to ensure that you trip away is as hassle free as possible.
