    Top 5 Alpine Activities (France)

    The French Alps offers a wide range of activities for travelers. The area is primarily defined by the mountain ranges and valleys of the Rhone-Alps, and the Provences-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, as well as peaks like Mont Blanc and the Grand Massif. Most activities around the Alps are centered on skiing across its many resorts and special runs.

    However, there are also many other activities that can be enjoyed in the French Alps, which range from exploring national parks to mountain biking, caving, and water sports. More on these activities can be found below:

    1 – Skiing

    There’s no questioning the popularity of skiing for the French Alps. Some of the largest ski resorts include Val Thorens, Les Menuires, and St Martin de Belleville. These kinds of courses, which also include Espace Killy, and L’Espace Cristal, feature a range of different difficulty levels, as well as options for snowboarding. All the resorts also come with high-quality accommodation options like for example apartment les Menuires or chalet st martin de Belleville, and least but not last  – shopping areas, as well as night clubs and restaurants.

    2 – Exploring National Parks

    The French Alps are host to three National Parks, which consist of Ecrins, Mercantour, and Vanoise. The Ecrins park is found in the Dauphine Alps to the South of France and allows for exploration of glaciers, woodlands, and small villages. Mercantour is similar in scope, offering excellent views in valleys like Veusible, as well as further small villages, and the natural beauty of the Godolasque Valley. Finally, the Vanoise park is near to the Taretaise and Maurienne skiing regions and is excellent for wildlife seeing and trekking.

    3 – Mountain Biking

    Novice and more experienced cyclists descend on different parts of the Alps every year to tackle its winding paths and cross country forests. The heat of the Southern Alps tends to provide the most popular destinations, with paths running between Provence and the mountains. While safety is a concern for some of the higher altitude climbs, the French Alps offers many options for cyclists. Key areas to visit include Morzine in the Portes du Soleil, as well as Avoriaz, and areas around the Grand Massif. Cyclists can also enjoy inland cottages and chalets while passing through the mountains.

    4 – Caving

    Also popular around different parts of the French Alps is caving, with areas like the Champsaur and Valguedemar valleys being particularly popular. The Alpine caves offer labyrinthine structures that have been a fascination for archaeologists and adventurers for centuries. More than 300 sites can be explored around the Alps, with one of the more unique being the Chauvet-Pont D’Arc Cave, which has an unexplored 26,000 drop, and rare animal paintings on its walls.

    5 – Water Sports

    Aside from skiing, water sports tend to represent some of the most popular activities in the French Alps. Key activities include water rapids, hydrospeeding, and abseiling, or canyoning, down waterfalls. The River Dranse is a regular destination for water sports enthusiasts, with others preferring to sail and surf around the lakes and rivers of Morzine, and within Annecy. Most ski resorts also offer pools and opportunities to learn water skiing.
