8 Must Have Items While Traveling for Business… Or Pleasure

International travel is exciting and much different than simply visiting a nearby city in the states. When travelling internationally for business, there are even more things to consider to make sure your trip is a success. Thorough preparation is essential for a good trip. Here’s a list of some of the things you should remember to bring with you.

    Offline Maps and GPS

If you’re going to be doing any of your own navigating while overseas, it’s a good idea to prepare beforehand by downloading some offline maps onto your smartphone. Offline maps will allow you to find your way without worrying about an Internet or data connection. As a backup, it’s a good idea to bring a separate GPS along with you.

    Important Documents

Important documents should be rounded up before your trip. Things like your passport, international driver’s license, hotel and flight confirmations, and other necessary documents should all go in the same place. Make copies to keep in another location. Also create a list of phone numbers you’d need in an emergency, like your bank and credit card phone numbers.

    USB Device and Cloud Backup

Don’t forget to bring along a USB device that contains any relevant data and information. You should also have all your important stuff on cloud backup, so that you can access it anywhere.

    Tablet and/or Laptop

A tablet and/or laptop will allow you to work while you’re on-the-go. A tablet is particularly useful because of its small size. You’ll be able to work while you’re waiting in the airport or hotel, or while you’re on your long flight. You can also ensure that you have access to important programs and resources while you’re in business meetings and the like.

    Handheld Clothes Steamer

Consider bringing along a handheld clothes steamer so you won’t have to rely on your hotel having an iron and ironing board. With a handheld clothes steamer, you can make sure your suit/business clothes are free from wrinkles, which are sure to develop during travelling.

    Outlet Adapter and Surge Protector

Other countries use different electrical outlets than the United States. To ensure you’ll be able to charge your cell phone and other devices, bring along an outlet adapter. If you’re going to be working from your hotel room, it’s also a good idea to bring along a surge protector that can convert 110v to 220v.

    A Money Belt

Unfortunately, wearing a suit or other business attire in a foreign country can make you stand out as a particularly good target for pickpockets and thieves. To protect yourself, don’t carry your money and cards in your wallet or purse like usual. Before your trip, purchase a money belt that can be worn under your clothes and close to your body to outsmart criminals.

    Business Casual Clothes

During your trip, you’ll probably have the opportunity to do some sightseeing. You may also get invited by your business colleagues to more casual settings. Bring along some business casual clothes with comfortable walking shoes so you can accept those invitations.

If you remember to bring all these things with you, you’ll be prepared for a variety of situations that you might encounter on your trip. Forgetting one essential item can lead to a lot of unnecessary stress in an already stressful situation. Before you start packing, make a list (including these items), and check it off as you go along.
