The 5 Best Places to Stay in Wales

Staycationing is more popular than ever, now that we have hit a double-dip recession. With families unable to afford exotic holidays abroad, Wales has become a go-to vacation destination. Our selection of the best Welsh places to stay will hopefully help your family get the most out of your staycation, whatever your budget.

    Plas Curig, Snowdonia

Not many people enjoy the hostel experience. At the mercy of other travellers’ sleeping habits, a good night’s sleep isn’t likely. You put yourself through the hostel experience not because you want to, but because it’s cheap and simple.

Recently, there has been a hostel takeover. Plas Curig in Snowdonia is one of the many hostels across the world that has tried to revolutionise the hostel experience. Designed like a sample out of an interior magazine, not only is this hostel pretty to look at, but it has also kept their guests’ comfort in mind: the beds are stocky enough to prevent rocking as travellers climb the ladder, an extra blanket is provided for chilly nights, and there is extra storage space for all your possessions. Also, the bathrooms are warm.

    Crug Glas, Abereiddy

Is even a boutique hostel your idea of a nightmare? Get five star luxury accommodation at this seven-bedroom Georgian country house. Planted on a 600 acre farm, Crug Glas does decadence the old-fashioned way with afternoon tea, fresh flowers, and cream-laced porridge. Previously owned by the Bishop of St David’s, this elegant hotel is very close to Abereiddy beach, which is famous for its black sand and fossils.

    Penmaenuchaf Hall, North Walls

There are few luxury North Wales hotels that boast the elegance of Penmaenuchaf Hall. Seated on a spectacular private estate, amongst lush, green mountains, Penmaenuchaf has a high standard of service and tastefully furnished rooms. The surrounding gardens are worth seeing in themselves and the location in Snowdonia’s National Park is hard to beat.

    Haystone Farmhouse, Merrion

No longer part of a working farm, Haystone is perfect for hikers walking along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. It’s a homely sort of place dating back to the 16th century and packed with character; there is even a library to relax in, with an open fire.

    Plas Farmhouse, Narbeth

On a budget, but still want to stay at a lovely, country hotel? Plas Farmhouse promises you a beautiful, old building from the 16th century with a 21st century twist. Wi-fi and flat screen TVs are available, so you are comfortable whilst you’re away from home. Looking at their website, it definitely needs a modern day hand, but don’t be fooled by their dire online presence. This hotel, in the flesh, exceeds expectations.

Owner, Julie, lives in a separate wing, so it feels as if this gorgeous, old, farmhouse is all yours. Welcoming fresh posies and an invitation to light the already stacked fire are there to invite you to relax in the Welsh countryside at your leisure. Sort out your website, Plas Farmhouse!
