If you’ve ever dreamed of making your travels last for months and years rather than days and weeks then you’ll probably have come to a realization: you’ll need to be earning money at the same time. Fortunately, if you’re proficient at English (and you must be to be able to read this!) you have skills that are in demand. Teaching English as a foreign language may well be the calling for you.
Needless to say, teaching English in this capacity is a role that will give you the chance to meet new people and see the world. If you’re one of the many people considering this path we’ve compiled a list of a few things to remember before embarking on this exciting journey.
1) Do you have the necessary qualifications?
You’re going to need to have been educated to a degree level. Most places will require you to have this qualification as it proves to them that you have a full understanding of the subject. You’re also going to have to show them that you’re capable of teaching English. There are a variety of short term intensive course you can take to gain the required qualifications to teach. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a recognized qualification in many countries so it may be a good idea to find somewhere that provides comprehensive IELTS exam preparation.
2) Learn the culture
It’s important to do your homework and find out what is the norm in the country you’re visiting. It might be a good idea to get in touch with the school you’re looking to teach at, or someone native of the country you’re headed and find out what you’re expected to wear, and some things that are definite don’ts. Different countries have massively varied cultures so make sure you don’t stick out like a sore thumb or get yourself into trouble.
3) Get a basic grasp of the language
You normally aren’t required to speak the native language and it’s usually preferred that you have no knowledge of their lingo as they fear that you’ll use it in the classroom. It’s always a good idea to know basic sentences so you can communicate basic questions to the locals though. It will make living abroad easier than. Plus, it might look a little rude if you have moved to a country and not bothered to even learn a simple “hello”.
4) Don’t forget why it is you’re there
In a new environment, meeting new people is going to be an exciting time, just make sure that you strike the right balance between having fun and work. Not only is the role a great opportunity to see the world but it will show future employers that you’re adaptable and committed too. If you put everything into the job, you’ll reap the benefits.
5) Make sure you’re safe
Living in a new country thousands of miles from friends and family is bound to be scary. It’s important to keep your wits about you and don’t leave your common sense at home! Unfortunately there are people out there who will prey on innocent people who are new to the area, so make sure you’re aware of any scams or traps going on.

Teaching English abroad is a fantastic way to experience another culture for an extended period of time and earn a few pennies whilst you’re at it – not to mention the great fun you’ll have passing on your language skills to some fortunate youngsters. Once you’re undergone the necessary training and earned your qualification the world is your oyster! Then all that’s left to do is to go and book your flight tickets for the chance of a once in a life time experience.
