Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva pledged to try to host the 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in early February next year if he is elected new prime minister.
The Asean summit, which was scheduled for Dec 15-18 in Chiang Mai, was postponed after People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) occupied two airports — Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang — in Bangkok from Nov 25 to Dec 3.
"The new government ought to speed up the summit in order to restore the confidence of our ASEAN friends," Mr Abhisit said.
The postponement was criticised by some Asean leaders, including
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who described the delay as a
setback for Southeast Asia.
The summit has been tentatively moved to March.
