South Africa is the perfect backpacking destination. It has the winning combination of stunning weather (the sun will always be shining somewhere in South Africa!), exquisite scenery, beautiful people and plenty of good times. Backpacking through this breath-taking country is a fabulous way of seeing the tourist hotspots as well as the little gems that are not as frequented by visitors, giving you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and natural wonder of South Africa.

Here are 15 tips to backpacking through South Africa and getting the most from your experience:

    1. Even though a backpacking trip is usually less rigidly planned than many other vacations, it does not mean that no planning is required. Do plenty of research online and book as much as possible ahead of time to ensure that you don’t miss out.
    2. Stay at reputable backpacking lodges, preferably those registered with a recognized website.
    3. Do not, under any circumstances, hitchhike. It is not safe or reliable, as most motorists are hesitant to pick up a hitchhiker. Rather, opt for a backpacking service like the BazBus or use public transport. Of course, hiring a car is always the best option, but can be costly. International driving licenses will be required.
    4. Use plenty of sunscreen while exploring the country. Even in overcast weather, the UV rays can be very damaging.
    5. Invest in a kikoi, which is a light piece of fabric that can be worn as a cover for your face, neck or shoulders. It dries quickly, making for the perfect backpacking accessory.
    6. Get a travel book so that you are aware of the attractions and activities in each of the places in which you will be staying.
    7. When staying at backpackers and participating in exciting activities, speak to the locals. South Africans are, generally, friendly folk, and your South African experience will be enriched by them. Be prepared for plenty of variety and avoid discrimination.
    8. Township tours are really awesome, but avoid going into the townships on your own or without guides.
    9. Most of the food in South Africa is very much in line with the rest of the world. However, it is recommended that you enquire what certain dishes are if they are foreign to you. Smiley’s (sheep’s heads), ‘Mopane’ worms and ‘skilpadjies’ (livers wrapped in stomach net-fat) need to be explained to you before you brave these local delights.
    10. There are a number of internet cafés in all of the major cities and towns, as well as in the smaller towns and villages.
    11. Be more adventurous than you ordinarily would be so that your South African experience is truly memorable. There is so much to do and see in this country that you don’t want to be limited by prejudices or fears.
    12. Always be aware of your belongings and do not carry more money or possessions (cameras, etc…) than necessary. Like any destination in the world, there are pickpockets in South Africa who sometimes make targets of tourists carrying valuable goods.
    13. Although most of the country is malaria-free, areas near the northern borders (including the Kruger Park) require that you take precautions against contracting malaria. This needs to be done in advance, so book an appointment with a travel clinic as soon as your trip is confirmed.
    14. Never litter. Allow others to enjoy the beauty of South Africa as you have.
    15. Try to support local initiatives so that the tourism industry benefits even rural efforts. This will assist the people at grassroots level to better themselves and their lives and for you to be an integral part of this development.

    1. I’ve never been to South Africa, but I just know that it has to be the most beautiful place on earth. I went backpacking in Australia and in Brazil, but I’m little scared to go backpacking alone in South Africa. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’d love to look for some people who’d like to travel together in South Africa and maybe even save some money by sharing rooms. Anyone want to join me on a backpacking trip to South Africa? 😛
