    Bangkok: Dusit Thani

Royal Thai style, the Dusit Thani offers traditional luxury and eminent business comforts. A government enterprise, it is enthroned in a prime position at the base of Lumphini park, making both the Siam and Silom districts easily accessible. The gist is classical elegance, so it's gorgeous but very sedate.

The hotel is inordinately popular with business clients and is always crawling with conferences. This comes as no surprise given the stately rooms, top-notch security and impeccable service which, like the beautiful pool and spa, also appeal to tourists. The rooms are tastefully and demurely decorated in traditional Thai style. Don't expect modern lines or unusual flourishes – this is about thick curtains, silky white bed covers and guild mirrors. Faithful to the business crowd, the flash new 'Club' rooms are packed with high-tech fixtures and complimentary executive extras (Internet, local phone calls, breakfasts and happy hour privileges). Club rooms are also more interesting in terms of decor, with warm grey and ochre silks and beautiful writing desks.

    Author tip

centerLumphini Park offers a wonderful breath of fresh air and greenery and a welcome escape from the hot, concrete streets. Come early in the morning to see people doing t'ai chi. On the eastern side of the park is the Suan Lom Night Bazaar which has market shopping a little calmer than that at Chatuchak and a fantastic outdoor beer garden with tireless Thai cover bands.
