Exploring Colorado – A Backpackers Manual

    Some Famous Trails

Rocky Mountain National Park is probably the most famous backpacker’s destination in Colorado. More than a third of this alpine park lies above the timberline, and over 60 of its summits tower over 12,000 feet. There is an amazing variety of wildlife here, and some spectacular lakes and forests. Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan Range is another spectacular trails with summer sightings of a sea of wildflowers. Then, there is the 471 miles of trail from Denver to Durango. A hire car to begin the journey, and then backpacking through these beautiful trails is all that is needed to make you fall in love with nature again. The White River, the Front Range mountains, and the Routt National Forest are among some of the other backpacker-friendly regions.

    Best Seasons

The best time to backpack through Colorado is from early-to-mid July till September. Even though the rainy season lasts from the end of July up to August, yet it is during these months that the wildflowers are in full bloom. During the month of September, the aspen trees begin to pick up their autumnal hues, thus making backpacking an added pleasure. However, the fall season can be cold and you need to be prepared for the low temperatures.

    Respect Nature

Backpacking follows the policy of leaving no trace anywhere, and treating the trails with respect and concern. Leave them in as good a condition you found them in, or maybe even cleaner. Watch out for bears, and do not leave food lying around or eat out in open containers. Camping in the outdoors is always fun, but make sure that you do not leave any residue behind. Watch out for lightning on the higher elevations, since it is a common cause for accidents. Treat all water before you drink, and do not travel without sunscreen, especially at higher altitudes.

    Plan a Trip Carefully

The variety of terrain and the vagaries of weather require careful planning before you set out on a trip. Choose a trail that suits your physical fitness. Drink clean water, and watch out for high altitude sickness. Be sure of where you are going and how long you plan to take to reach the destination. Above all, be sure that you have the aptitude and the stamina to complete the journey.

    1. This is a place I really want to go to, I can imagine the beautiful views and I´m the kind of person who loves outdoor adventures instead of going to a fancy hotel on a vacation. I would definitely look for someone I know already has been there cause its a little scary, you have to know where you are and what you can find.

    2. I have always wanted to visit Colorado so I am really glad that you decided to share this article. Great picture to it really shows off the beauty of the area – it was enough to get my attention.

    3. Colorado definitely has impressive geology and breathtaking sites. I have picked up a few Colorado friends online who have spoken about the progressive cities they live in, primarily Colorado Springs being a hub for those interested in metaphysical subjects.
