Lanzarote is a fantastic holiday destination as you can enjoy a break on this Cool Canary Island at any time of the year and still expect plenty of hot weather. Whilst there is also loads to do and see – making it perfect for those who like to combine sunbathing with sightseeing.
Lanzarote is just a four hour flight from the UK but a world away in terms of climate and culture, thanks to its location off the coast of what was once the Western Sahara, an area now claimed by Morocco. Yet along with the other six islands in the Canaries Lanzarote is owned by Spain, sharing a common language with the mainland.
The best way to explore the island is by car, as there are lots of sights to take in and few of them are served by local buses. Car hire in Lanzarote is easy to organise as there are lots of companies competing for business here, which also helps to keep rental rates down too. Book your vehicle at Arrecife airport on arrival or in advance via the internet.
There are loads of great places to stay too, especially for the independent traveller who wants to avoid hotels. You can browse hundreds of Lanzarote villas by visiting the Lanzarote Guidebook website, which offers one of the best selections of holiday rental accommodation on the island. Expect to pay upwards of €600 per week for a standard two bed villa with pool in one of the main resorts.
If you can tear yourself away from the pool then make sure you take in some of Lanzarote´s amazing sights. These include the eerie volcanic region, known locally as the Mountains of Fire, where eruptions decimated this part of the island a few hundred years ago. Or you can explore historic towns such as Teguise, which was the capital of Lanzarote until handing this mantle over to Arrecife in 1852.
But for many visitors all they want to do is lie back on a beach and drift away – and there are certainly plenty of spots like this on the island. Amongst the best beaches is the big bay at Famara, which boasts a beach of around 7km long. There are also some fantastic sands in all of the three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise. So if you are planning to escape to the sun this year make Lanzarote your top choice.
