Volunteering in a foreign country is more than just a getaway from home. It’s an opportunity for you to help others while experiencing new cultures. If you are looking for a chance to help others and see the world, an overseas volunteer program might be the adventure you are looking for. These volunteer programs give you  the chance to immerse yourself in other cultures while helping others.
Volunteering will also have a positive impact on your future. College admissions officers look favorably upon applicants who have a history of volunteering, and some scholarship programs require you have a certain number of volunteer hours before being considered.
You’ll find no shortage of opportunities to volunteer abroad – from the Galapagos Islands to Thailand, and points in between. So perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of studying abroad is deciding on the right opportunity.
What to do
Finding the right organization to join as a volunteer depends on many different aspects of your life. While some organizations do accept volunteers without regard to their skills or abilities, it is a good idea to have some sort of skill set related to what you are going to be doing. Make a list of what you are good at, such  as organizing, building, gardening, communicating or cooking. Then think about what major you’d like to pursue in college. If you want to be a veterinarian, for example, you may be able to find an overseas volunteer opportunity working with animals.
Where to go
One important factor to consider when deciding where to volunteer is language. While many opportunities designed for high school students will be English-based, volunteering overseas is a great way to hone your skills in a different language. If you have a cursory knowledge of Spanish and would like to speak it fluently, look for opportunities in countries where Spanish is the native language.
What you want
Ask yourself what objectives you hope to achieve by volunteering. Is it to learn new skills, meet new people or learn how to be a leader? Do you want to learn a foreign language? Do you want to work with native people or help with building projects? All of these questions will help you determine the program you should volunteer with and your destination.
Length of service
Before selecting a volunteer program, determine how much time you have off school and how long can you be away from home. You may think you want to volunteer overseas for a month, but living abroad for any length of time will inevitably cause some degree of homesickness. Be realistic about your ability to be away from loved ones and your usual routine.
How to sign up
Make a list of organizations you want to volunteer with, and contact each one to ask about their volunteer programs and the requirements to get involved. You may need to plan ahead and postpone your trip until it’s financially feasible, or you may need to raise your own funds. Some programs may offer scholarships or financial aid, And if that’s the case, volunteer locally until you are able to travel overseas.
Volunteering will help you build leadership skills that will prepare you for the future. You’ll find a sense of personal fulfillment in helping others as you learn about new cultures, see historical sites and meet new people who share your passions. Volunteering abroad will change your life and make you a more well-rounded person.
