Must-See Places in NYC That Are off the Tourist List

New York City or NYC as it is affectionately known is one of those places, which feature on just about every person’s ‘must-visit list’. Even those who have already visited will have plans to come back to NYC again at some point in the future and it is easy to see why so many people fall in love with the place. However, its popularity can mean that the well known tourist attractions are sometimes quite crowded and while we will all want to make sure we visit as many as possible, sometimes it is nice to take a breather. Luckily there are also lots of must-see places in NYC that are off the tourist list. Read on to find some of NYC’s best kept secrets that you will be able to enjoy without the crowds.

The first less known must-see place in NYC may seem like a bit of an odd suggestion because it is a cemetery. Green Wood is located in Brooklyn and has long been celebrated by the locals as being a slightly quirky attraction. Back in the 1860s it actually competed against Niagara Falls for the accolade of being the most popular tourist spot in the state, which it narrowly missed out on. Still Green Wood is the resting place of many notable New Yorkers, has the highest point in the borough and has some amazing architecture.

The Hall of Fame for Great Americans is another must-see place that is often missed. The building itself boasts an open air colonnade that is 630 feet in height with amazing views across the Harlem River to the Cloisters. Inside there are over 98 busts dedicated to celebrated Americans such as George Westinghouse, President Franklin Roosevelt, etc.

The Paley Centre for Media used to be known as the Museum of Television and Radio and is a perfect stop off for those who happen to be TV addicts. There are over 150,000 clips from radio programs, TV shows, etc. that you can watch to your heart’s content. They also have special events on a fairly regular basis so be sure to check what’s on before you come to NYC so you can catch whatever takes your fancy.

If you want a glimpse of the panorama of NYC but really can’t face the queues for the Empire State Building or one of the other majestic buildings that dot the city then head for the Queens Museum of Art. Here you will be able to view a perfect scale model of NYC that has been created in painstaking detail and is incredibly lifelike. It really gives you a sense of the actual size of the city and its different boroughs. The other great thing is that for a donation you can also adopt a building and have your name written on it. So you can also own your very own piece of New York real estate.

Of course there are many more must-see places in NYC that are off the tourist list than those few mentioned above. Book your hotel in NYC (the term in Swedish is hotell New York), take the time to look and you will soon find a whole new world available to you from an art gallery that turns into a happening nightspot every Friday night to a “snooze at the zoo”, where you can sleep over at the central park zoo for a night and take part in loads of different animal and zoo based activities.
