There are countless reasons to visit London, including its famous shopping districts, impressive architecture and of course, sampling a West End theatre show. There are so many different types of live production to see in the capital of England that it can be a daunting task in deciding which one to spend your money on. From plays to musicals to tribute shows, you are bound to find at least a couple you will enjoy. If you are stuck however, then here are some suggestions for which show to choose.
If you are into jukebox musicals that revisit an earlier age in time, then Dreamboats and Petticoats would be a brilliant show for you. Set in the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of two young musicians called Norman and Bobby who compete with each other to win a song writing competition. Featuring polka-dot skirts and bumper cars, Dreamboats and Petticoats uses classic rock’n’roll tunes by artists such as Chuck Berry and Roy Orbison to tell the light-hearted story. If you like the music from this era, then you will love the show, currently on stage at the Playhouse Theatre in London.
Classic musicals will never go out of fashion, and if you would like to see a timeless story told on one of the most famous stages in the world, then The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium is surely a must-see. Based on the original 1900 book by L. Frank Baum and its subsequent adaptation onto the big screen in 1939, The Wizard of Oz has been spruced up even more by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has added a further five songs to the classics that include Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Follow the Yellow Brick Road. If you like the story, then you will love this production with its impressive set designs that take viewers from the drab world of Kansas to the bright Land of Oz.
Musicals are not for everyone, and if you prefer a play over a song-and-dance fest, then why not opt for the haunting The Woman in Black? The chilling ghost story has recently been turned into a movie starring Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, and if you like psychological thrillers then you will love The Woman in Black. It tells the story of a young solicitor named Arthur Kipps, who is set on unravelling the mystery of a lady dressed in black who appears in a remote village. The classic play has been showing in the West End for over 23 years and currently plays at the Fortune Theatre.
These are just some suggestions of live productions that are worth checking out on a trip to London, but there are countless others to choose from.
