There is a real sense of history in Savannah which is the riverside birthplace of Georgia and southerners are often joking that in Atlanta they ask your business, in Charleston they ask your mother’s maiden name and in Savannah they ask what you want to drink. It is this positive spirit and partying outlook on life that makes this a great location with so much history to take in as well.
Savannah
Here are some great stops to consider in Savannah.
Savannah River Queen
Step on board this wonderful old fashioned replica of a 19th century stern-wheel riverboat and step back in time as you get the chance to take in some of the best views of the area from the river and there is a choice of cruises that include a sightseeing harbour tour and you can experience the local cuisine and cultural entertainment whilst on board, so this is a great way to while away an afternoon or evening.
The Historic Railroad Shops
This complex and visitor attraction offers some of the finest remaining examples of Victorian engineering and architecture to be found anywhere and has now been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The site is maintained as a railroad and industrial heritage museum and you can see working models and layouts of trains from a bygone era. This is a popular tourist attraction and even if you think steam trains are not your thing, the historical aspect and the completeness of the exhibits will be sure to hold your attention and interest.
Urban Paradise
Savannah offers the largest national urban historic landmark district area in America, which means that within a walking area of 22 green squares over a 2.5 square mile area you can take in more than 1,600 buildings and structures of historical and architectural importance. There are sights to inspire and interest you at virtually every turn and you may want to use one of the local guides to get the most out of your time in this area.
Savannah Music Festival
The area is rightly regarded as a cultural hub and if you are in the area between around the 21st March and 6th April (2013 dates) you will have the opportunity to witness what is regarded as one of the top musical festivals in the world. The festival aims to satisfy a very broad reach of musical tastes and even you are into Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Flamenco or Funk to name a few, then you will be well catered for and enjoy an even greater party atmosphere in Savannah during the time of the festival.
Tybee Beach
If you are looking to get away from the city and enjoy a good mix of sandy beaches and plenty of wildlife for good measure then Tybee Beach is probably where you should be headed. The area is just 18 east of the centre of Savannah and offers 5 miles of unspoilt beaches and an area that you will be sharing with pelicans and dolphins amongst others and you can even take part in the organized ecology tours that run there or take a look at the Tybee Marine Science Center, so there is plenty to occupy the whole family.
These are just some of the stops to consider but when you remember that Savannah has almost three hundred years of history to reflect upon, there is a whole host of attractions to hold your attention during your stay.
