Shark Cage Diving in South Africa

If meeting a shark face to face is on your bucket list, South Africa offers you the opportunity to do so with 8 operators in Cape Town and surrounds, all fully prepared to cast you into the ocean’s murky depths to encounter the famous beasts of the sea. No need to be scared though, it’s completely safe and you will be in the capable and highly experienced hands of experts like shark diving expert Brian McFarlane from Great White Shark Projects. The sharks you will meet are the world famous great whites; they may not be the biggest in the sea but are renowned as the most dangerous.

Hop aboard with your skipper and negotiate the waves to find yourself in the notorious Shark Alley. After dropping anchor, specially designed bait is dropped into the water to attract the sharks. Safety is of course a big issue and the skipper will provide you information on what to and what not to do. Common sense is a large factor in staying alive; if you do as the skipper tells you then you live to tell the tale. Unless you leap off the side of the boat and into a sharks path it’s highly unlikely you will have a fatal trip.

The shark cages used are attached to the boat and are easily accessible and completely safe, although if the sea is too rough no diving will take place. However, this doesn’t spoil the fun, it is equally as spectacular to watch the sharks from the boat, perhaps it doesn’t hold the same level of thrill but it’s still closer than most people will ever come to meeting a great white shark.

The cage takes around 4 or 5 people and each group will spend approximately 20 minutes face to face with the sharks.  While you wait you can enjoy the topside viewing and the ‘spy hopping’ which is the sharks breaching right out of the water in pursuit of prey.  These action shots are of course the most sought after.

Most operators will collect you from hotels in Cape Town.  Lunch is also included and you will also have the option to purchase a video of your experience.
