BANGKOK, Dec 16 – Newly-elected Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should head the government's economic team by himself so that he will have a full authority to deal with the country's economic challenges, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI).
Speaking after the opposition Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva was officially voted Thailand's 27th prime minister, TDRI director Somchai Jitsuchon said the new government must accelerate forming a team of economic ministers to supervise efforts to address the economic problems.
Mr. Abhisit's remark that he was ready to take up the head of the economic team bodes well for the Thai economy, Dr. Somchai said, because he would have full authority to steer the team.
He viewed it would be justified if M.R. Chatumonkol Sonakul, former central bank governor, and Prasarn Trairattanakul, president of Kasikornbank Plc decided to join the economic team.
Dr. Somchai said both bankers are versatile experts and deeply understand the functions of both state and private-sector performance.
