What to do while trekking through New Zealand

Even though New Zealand is a small country compared to many it certainly packs a lot of punch when it come adventurous things to do.  Whether you are an adrenaline junkie looking for the next best stunt of if you simply enjoy sightseeing New Zealand has it all and because it is so small, everything is usually within driving distance allowing you to fit many activities into a short amount of time.

I know how to have a good time in NZ, having lived there for five years allowed me to investigate and find out more about to beautiful country and what it has to offer along with some insights you will hopefully find useful.

Here is my list of best things to do when visiting New Zealand:

The Nevis – Bungee Jump from World 2nd highest platform
Not only will the thought of jumping from the world’s second highest bungee (134 metres high) take your breath away but so will the picturesque scenery.

I am not one who enjoys heights but if you are nervous it will help if you go with a bunch of people.  When you see others jumping into mid-air fearlessly it help you to do the same.  Not only will you have an Incredible rush of excitement but the view of the Queenstown Mountains and vast plains it is definitely worth the money of NZ$260.

    The Waitomo glow worm caves
This is a really great experience for everyone to enjoy.  Visit the location of Waitomo and then abseil down the opening in the earth (similar to a Cenote) where you land in a the cool dark waters of the cave.  From there take the tubes that are provides when you reach the water and drift through the dark cave that will eventually be lit up by glow worms. This is New Zealand’s version of the Milky Way.  Prices start from NZ$120.00

    Surfing on the West Coast
You won’t find a kiwi during the summer who is not either swimming in the river or enjoying the ocean.  Raglan is known throughout New Zealand as the surfing destination.  Whether you are a longtime surfer or someone looking to learn Raglan beach has beachscape for both.  This beach is particularly interesting because the beach sand is dark and also be the waves break to the left (one of the longest breaks in the world).  The best part about this is that it is free!

    The Catlins
Located on the South Island near to the city of Dunedin the Catlins offers a spectacular view of scenery and wildlife.  If you are into nature this place will give you long walks, great views for photography.  You will also be able to view in person the petrified forests, sea lions, Albatros, penguins and fauna.  This is one of the few places in New Zealand where you can see all this in one general location.  This too is all a great free way to see New Zealand.

    Hiking the Glaciers
On the West Coast of the South Island are the frigid glaciers of New Zealand which are part of the UNESCO Heritage Centre.  There are two main rivers that have converted into ice.  The two most notable glaciers are Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, both of which you can hike, or view via helicopter.  What is so unique about this is that there are rainforests, ice streams and lakes all nearby and ready to explore.  The Helicopter ride cost around NZ$400 while exploring the ice with all the gear cost about NZ$300.  Even though the cost may be expensive this is a must do activity if you go to New Zealand.
