If you are looking to experience Africa, then Kenya safari and beach holidays are ideal. It is a country that is hospitable and striking and there are many outlets for the tourists. But, you should always try to do the five essentials during your visit.
Safari
Going on a safari in Kenya almost goes without saying and is one of the prime reasons holidaymakers come here. Kenya has so many opportunities to take in and see its amazing natural wildlife and habitats. Perhaps one of the most well known is the Masai Mara National Reserve. It is a massive reserve filling more than 1,500 square kilometres of the country. By taking one of the laid on trips with professional guides you can experiences once in a lifetime sights. Watch the lions and other big cats such as cheetahs hunting and see the majestic herds of elephants. Finally, come at the right time to feel the power of the wildebeest migration in July and August.
Next on your list should be the Nairobi National Park, if nothing else for the fact it is so close to the city itself. That makes it so easy to visit. The strangeness of herds of animals strolling around with the Nairobi skyline in the distance is a little surreal and a unique experience.
Eat
Kenya has a wonderful range of unique eating and dining opportunities for you. One of the most popular is the Carnivore. Not for timid diners and definitely unsuitable for vegetarians, this is a meat eater’s paradise with plenty of local delicacies. The entrance itself announces their intentions with a large barbeque pit. This is usually decked out with actual swords skewering a fabulous range of meats such as crocodile, beef, ostrich and many more. Remember to keep your table flag flying if you want to keep being served.
Explore
Although famous for its safaris, Kenya has a lot more to offer. Take a dhow trip in one of the authentic fishing boats along the rivers that criss cross the landscape and see Kenya as never before. Alternatively, explore the history of the region through the museum and fortifications of Fort Jesus in Mombasa. For the adventurous there is also the opportunity to climb Mount Kenya.
Fly
Your adventures in Kenya don’t have to just keep you on the ground all the time. Many of the sights, smells and sounds are most breathtaking from the air. A balloon trip is silent and spectacular, allowing you to drift over the national parks effortlessly. Below, you will see the hunts and the wandering animals that seem almost oblivious to your presence. Top it off with a champagne breakfast afterwards and that is a day well spent.
Experience the Culture
Kenya is full of authentic and active culture and tribal activity. Trips to villages are easily arranged and provide a lively and colourful way to see Kenya up close. The Masai are well known and still live pretty much as they always have. You get to speak to the villagers including the revered elders, share a cup of traditional ‘chai’ and perform dances.
The Swahili coastal region is also worth a trip, showing the melting pot of influences in the country with African, Indian, Portuguese and Arabic people all having played their part.
