Named after the son of a celebrated Arcadian chief, Zakynthos is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea. It has an expansive coastline flooding with foaming sea waves each day. Shaped like an arrowhead, this island brings the elegance of Greece to life.
Why Go to Zakynthos?
Zakynthos is reputed for its ability to accommodate visitors who wish to party as well as those who look forward to spending a serene time with their families. Along with some neighboring islands, Zakynthos was also hit by a devastating earthquake in 1953 that demolished most of the splendid Venetian architecture. Nevertheless, the artifacts that remain are enough to inject a pang of nostalgia in you and become etched into your memories forever.
Zakynthos Towns
Each town in the Zakynthos Island is specific in its own way. The capital, Zakynthos town, is home to several malls, piazzas and branded shops. The Island boasts a beautifully constructed harbor, where you can witness the arrival and departure of huge sea vessels, an amazing experience indeed.
The Laganas town is famous among party crowds as the main clubbing town of the island. The streets of Laganas are dotted with bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and fast food outlets. Because the town is located conveniently close to the coast, the party scene tends to become even more vibrant. The Kalamaki town is the opposite of Laganas as it is more suitable for people looking forward to a fun-filled family vacation. It has beautiful sandy beaches that mesmerize you with their natural splendor and urge you to stay.
Zakynthos Weather
When the winter brings mild rainfall, Zakynthos is turned into a visual paradise with countless flowers blooming everywhere. The varieties of flowers are extensive, their colors unlimited, and their sweet fragrance makes the air in Zakynthos filled with romance. From March to May, the Zakynthos Island can be rightfully called “The Flower of The Levant”.
Zakynthos Beaches
The beaches here at Zakynthos are sandy, sun-kissed and serene. The beach at Alikes stretches in front of 2 resorts. It offers jet skiing, hand gliding, yacht sailing and other water sports. Nearby, local shacks serve a variety of cuisines that you can enjoy along with the fresh sea waves. The Dafni beach is a little hard to reach but its splendor is worth the trip. Located in the marine reserve, the tranquility at this beach is preserved by banning all kinds of traffic. Because Zakynthos is an island, crystal clear beaches are a common view throughout your stay.
Must See
Cape Skinari is a high-plateau point from where you can get a 360 view of the sea. Another historic trademark, which is frequently mentioned in Greek tourist ads and flyers, is the Navagio shipwreck. The Navagio was a smugglers’ ship that lost power and was thrown ashore at a glorious bay in Zakynthos. People visit it for its historical significance and to get a tour of its interior. On the north of the island, weathering and geological actions have led to the formation of “Blue Caves”. When light sparkles on the water that collects in these arches, the view becomes truly magnificent and has to be seen to be believed.
