Get Lost In Waterford – Ireland’s Oldest City

Steeped in history, Waterford City is the capital of the Sunny South East of Ireland. Viking traders founded it in 914, and since then it has been a pivotal part of Irish history, providing a platform for international trade and immigration coming the opposite way.

The Travelodge hotel in Waterford is ideally located so you can enjoy everything this great city has to offer. Here are some of the highlights.

The Waterford Museum of Treasures would be the perfect place to start. These three outstanding museums chronicle over one thousand years of history, from the aforementioned Viking ancestry, their treasure held at Reginald’s and the story of Georgian Waterford at the Bishop’s Palace from 1700 to 1970.

Theatre connoisseurs among you won’t want to miss out on a trip to the Theatre Royal. The Georgian playhouse was built 220 years ago, and was adapted in the late nineteenth century to the Theatre Royal. Known as ‘The People’s Theatre,’ it has hosted the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera since its inception in 1958.

After all that history and theatre, you’ll be both parched and starving. Luckily, Waterford has plenty to offer both foodies and the casual eaters. Whether you’re looking for an evening of fine dining or a gastro pub meal, you won’t be disappointed. La Boheme and The Gingerman are particular highlights.

Of course, not everything you’ll want to do happens in the city of Waterford. Country Waterford boasts some of the most stunning countryside in Ireland, Britain and Europe as a whole. While not known for its sunny climate, spring and summer in Ireland can reach Mediterranean temperatures, and what better place to sample them than some of County Waterford’s stunning beaches.

The perfect mix of emerging culture, arts, music, food and a rich history combine to make Waterford a prime location for a summer holiday/city break. Whether you’re looking to relax, soak up the history or seek some adventure in the County’s lush countryside, Ireland, and more specifically Waterford is the place for you. And if none of the above takes your fancy, you’re sure to find something suitable here.
