While there is concern about traveling to Mexico as a result of the violence created by Mexican drug cartels, the resort areas have been relatively untouched. There is one resort city that is the exception, Acapulco, which has had not only drug violence but also corruption amongst law enforcement. Base upon what I have read and heard about Acapulco, I wouldn’t recommend going to that area.

However I have been to both Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas and from my experiences there, firmly believe both are safe and great places to visit. Both have plenty of entertainment from waters sports, great nightclubs and high-end hotels.
But my favorite between the two is Cabo San Lucas. I suppose I base my opinion on how much fun I had at the nightclubs at Cabo vs. Puerto Vallarta. There are 3 great nightclubs I recommend if you are visiting the “Lands End.” These are El Squid Roe, Giggling Marlin and Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo. Personally I had the most fun at El Squid Roe where there is non-stop entertainment although I am not sure if there is live music there. Clearly every one was having a great time and if I return to Cabo, that is one of my first stops. The Giggling Marlin has their own form of entertainment although not over the top like Squid Roe. But you can be assured that you will have a great time and you have to bring your dancing shoes to either club. Cabo Wabo is also a can’t miss nightclub and here you can definitely see some great live music. There are other great nightclubs but these are the ones I visited.
If you prefer something more normal in terms of nightlife, there is the Hard Rock Cabo and Nikki Beach, which are both worth seeing.
If nightlife isn’t your cup of tea, then you have all sorts of other activities in and around Cabo San Lucas. You can take a nice dinner cruise in the Gulf of California or take a boat trip to Lands End, which is aptly named because it is literally at the end of Baja California. Boat trips will not only traverse the Gulf of California but also around the end, you reach the Pacific Ocean! It really is a spectacular view with panoramic vistas of both the Gulf and Pacific and the scenic coastline.
Another popular activity is deep-sea fishing. Although a little pricey, it might be worth investing into a trip at least once in your lifetime. Who knows, you might even catch a Marlin, although not a giggling one.
The finer hotels also have great restaurants and luxurious spas so you can spend some time there or check in with their travel desk and see what else there is to do in Cabo. One other activity in Cabo is golf. There is a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course in Cabo and a handful of other hotel/golf resorts in the area.
Lastly I would like to mention the residents of Cabo. Virtually everyone who lives in Cabo is very friendly and accommodating. You are sure to have a great time in Cabo and I can’t wait to go back.
