When you’re looking for a weekend away with your loved one or a Valentine’s Day treat you may want to try something different to the standard trip to Paris. The capital of France may be the iconic destination for romance but you’ll find just as much atmosphere and beautiful scenery to gaze at in Scotland.
Edinburgh has its iconic castle which dominates the skyline, Aberdeen has glistening granite buildings and Glasgow has some exceptional sites of its own which make the perfect backdrop to your romantic escapades.

Glasgow is packed with Art Nouveau architecture making it an elegant location for sweeping your beloved of their feet. Glaswegian architect Charles Mackintosh was a spearhead of this style and his mark is stamped all across the city; think flowing curvy lines and floral designs. The School of Art is one of his most famous creations along with The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.
Couples can take a trip to the Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street and indulge in tasty tea and cake while throwing looks of adoration across the table at each other. Designed by Charles Mackintosh, you’ll find his rose motif climbing the walls throughout these tearooms.
There is nothing like a beautiful view to fuel the feeling of desire. When in Glasgow, why not explore the Clyde River waterfront. In sunny weather you could even hire bicycles and travel its length from Glasgow Green through the city and on to the town of Clydebank.

Glasgow Green itself is one of the oldest parks in Scotland and is a great place to escape and get some quiet time with your partner away from the bustling city. You could take a cosy picnic and settle down near the tropical plants and Victorian elegance of The People’s Palace and Winter Gardens. Or, you could park yourselves near the Doulton Fountain (the largest terracotta fountain in the world) or in view of the impressive McLennan Arch.
Speaking of impressive views, also along the waterfront is Glasgow Science Centre where you can head up Glasgow Tower (the tallest tower in the world which can rotate 360 degrees) and overlook historic Glasgow. And it’s OK, there are two lifts so no need to worry about an exhausting climb to the top. Then you can comfort your partner if they feel a bit wobbly from the great height.
If you want to get out of the city, hire a car in Glasgow and drive out to Loch Lomond. It’s one of the largest lakes in the UK and contains many islands. There is plenty of opportunity to get involved in watersports here, from canoeing to windsurfing, so you’ll never get bored on your date.
To finish your day of romance, walk the cobbled streets of Merchant Square in Glasgow city, surrounded by stunning Victorian architecture. This area is full of restaurants and cafes to dine with your beau and it makes for an atmospheric setting. And, it’s all found under a covered and heated courtyard so can be enjoyed come rain or shine.
There are loads of bars for you to relax in whether you’re looking for a stylish wine bar, a traditional pub or a lively cocktail bar to finish your evening, it’s all here. If you’re idea of romance is a quiet evening at the cinema then Glasgow Film Theatre shows all the latest releases, indie films and classics. It has a beautiful art deco interior making it a bit more special than your average multiplex. This classic date setting is sure to be a hit and you can relax in the late night café-bar before the film or take your drink into the screening.
