Nothing can beat a good lookout. Whether you’re witnessing the spectacle of a lightning storm, doing a spot of whale watching or having some quiet perspective from a lofty height, it’s great to know just where to find an amazing vantage point.
Australia has fabulous lookouts in a range of locations, from world-famous national parks to less famous (but equally spectacular) quieter spots.
Let’s take a trip to some of our favourites.
Hassan’s WallÂ
Journey to the other-worldly blue-hazed glow of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. While this gigantic national park region is brimming with spectacular points for the snap-happy visitor, Hassan’s Wall is popular because it’s the highest. At about 1100 metres above sea level, you can admire the views by walking or riding around the lookout (standing utterly still in contemplation is fine too!). For famous views of the dramatic Three Sisters formation, you can’t go past Echo Point, though you’ll have to contend with the crowds.Â
The Twelve ApostlesÂ
There are lookouts and there are lookouts. The one at the Twelve Apostles gives visitors stunning views of the wondrous limestone rock stacks rising from the water along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. It certainly gets busy, sometimes downright crazy, but the views are so heavenly that all will be forgiven. In fact, there are so many panoramic spots to linger at along this legendary road that you’ll find yourself wishing you had a few extra days stacked up your sleeve. Expect breathtaking coastal views and spectacular vistas that will send your heart soaring.
Hanging RockÂ
Still in Victoria but for an amazing lookout of an altogether different kind, plan a journey to the fascinating and ever-mysterious Hanging Rock. The region is a rare volcanic formation near the towns of Woodend and Mount Macedon. Be warned. It has a slightly eerie feel, a mood only heightened by the iconic 1970s movie ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’. The plot focuses on a group of schoolgirls who disappear while picnicking in the area. If you’re game to clamber to the top of Hanging Rock, you’ll be well rewarded with gorgeous views of the valley below.
Mount Lofty Summit
For sweeping views of Adelaide, travel to the Mount Lofty Summit (we’d recommend going at night to see the city at its glittering best). Here, along with the knockout panoramas, you can also enjoy a sumptuous breakfast, romantic dinner or formal function at the peak’s restaurant and cafe. For a quieter experience, head to the Windy Point lookout in Belair for lovely views of the Adelaide Plains.
Cradle Mountain
If you’ve ever seen the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy (and we certainly hope you have), you’ll get an inkling of just some of the magical landscapes you will venture through on the way to conquer the summit of Cradle Mountain. Certainly one of Tasmania’s most spectacular of hiking adventures, Cradle Mountain rises to 1545 metres above sea level. If you’re the gung ho type, you can actually scale the mountain in one day (it’s described as a ‘strenuous return hike’). You’ll be at the mercy of the elements at any time, but once top, the 360 degree views are unimaginable – certainly worth the groaning muscles you’re sure to have for some time after.
Whale watching in WA’s south west
One of the best reasons to make your way to a lookout point is to clap your eyes on one of the world’s most magnificent creatures. Whale watching is a life changing experience and there’s arguably no better place to have that experience than in Western Australia’s south west region. This spectacular coastline is a migratory playground for hundreds of these amazing mammals between June and December. Chances are you’ll be able to see them frolicking in the water from landlocked points such as Cape Leeuwin and Flinders Bay, Conspicuous Cliffs, Denmark’s Ocean Beach and of course, Whale World in Albany.
