3 Fascinating Colonial Cities in Asia

Colonial cities are places that grew under the control of Europe, North America and Britain when the beginnings of a capitalist world were evident. Countries such as Britain would take over political control of places such as Hong Kong, essentially changing their culture and infrastructure. Factories were built in underdeveloped towns near the coast to enable shipping of various products.

These cities then adopted the architecture and style influences of the people that dominated them. This makes them very interesting places to explore, as they each have their own character and individual charm because of their interesting colonial history.

Here is a brief summary of the history of three fascinating colonial cities that are definitely worth a visit.

    1. Hong Kong

Hong Kong is located on China’s south coast and is one of the world’s most densely populated areas. It is known for its skyscrapers crowded together over a long skyline of buildings. Hong Kong was a British colony between 1841 to 1997, before that it was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War. It is now a very busy place that is home to a huge financial centre with a large transport network.

A lot of the architecture is influenced by modern design and the need to fit a great number of buildings into a small space. It can be quite an overwhelming place at first, but if you get stuck into the fast paced way of life you will start see its true appeal. The city is very well organised with plenty of things to see and do.

    2. Singapore

Singapore is a fairly small city state in South East Asia. Singapore is conveniently located on one of the major sea routes between China and India. Singapore is a multicultural haven, with Singapore residents living in harmony with the Indians, Chinese and Malays. This makes it a fantastic place to sample delicious food originating from different cultures. Whether you try some seafood, visit the main shopping centre or eat in restaurants around town you will be presented with lots of different dishes and tastes.

The British landed on Singapore in the 18th century and felt the need to establish it as a main port to restore their fleet. It was then taken over and possessed by Britain and proved this proved to be a good move as the economy flourished. This attracted people from surrounding areas, creating a peaceful multicultural society.

    3. Calcutta, India

Calcutta is a key trading and commercial district and one of the key urban centres of East India. It is an excellent example of the development of a colonial city. Around the 17th century, the Dutch, Portuguese and then the British set up trading here. The city grew rapidly and got so large they needed to create more accommodation for locals and rich residents. This resulted in the expansion and growth of a more modern city.

Calcutta is now India’s second largest city and the locals hold the city in high regard. There is a harsh contrast between the rich and poor, you will see some slums when you visit. The city is full of classic colonial architecture and fascinating buildings. The shocking contrast between the rich and the poor and city torn between old and new is hard to ignore. It might shock you or it might blow you away, but it will definitely leave its mark.
