How to Get the Most From Your Galápagos Islands Visit

The Galápagos Islands are famous for their breathtaking beauty, unparalleled biodiversity, and opportunities for adventure.  With so much to see and so many different ways to see the islands, a little preparation beforehand goes a long way towards making your visit to the Galápagos Islands an unforgettable one.

Here are some of my favorite pieces of advice to keep in mind for taking in the Galápagos Islands:

    1. Skip the boat

Many visitors to the Galápagos Islands opt for cruise tours that take them from location to location and they end up spending much of their days going from ship to shore and vice versa.  A better way to see the Galápagos Islands is to stay on the islands and explore the islands from there. Not only will you find these more comfortable, you’ll find these offer plenty more opportunities to see the vast beauty of the islands.

    2. Don’t forget about the people and culture

While the wildlife on the islands get most of the attention, remember that the Galápagos Islands are also home to more than 25,000 people with their own unique flavor and culture.  Take a visit into town along the sandy streets and get to know the people and culture of the Galápagos Islands.

    3. Make time for the Charles Darwin Research Station

The Galápagos Islands were famously studied by Charles Darwin, giving him insights that ultimately led to his theory of evolution.  The Charles Darwin Research Station is a research station dedication to the conservation and study of the Galápagos Islands.  The station – which until his recent death, was home to Lonesome George, the last Pinta Tortoise in the world – is not to be missed.

    4 . Enjoy the landscape

The Galápagos Islands aren’t just home to fantastic biodiversity, they’re also home to beautiful beaches, sparkling blue water, and outstanding volcanic terrain.  Be sure to take plenty of time to take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Galápagos Islands.

    5. Be eco-friendly

However, the single best way to appreciate the islands and all their beauty is to be mindful of the impact humans can have on the delicate ecosystems of the land and sea.  Ask your tour guide or local officials if you’re unsure.  A trained naturalist guide will be able to answer all your questions and ensure the safety of the islands today and for future generations.
