As we begin to feel the itch of 2013 with work, relationships, hobbies and some of us failing our new years resolutions it’s time to treat our-self to a little stress free break. With many beautiful cities just a stones throw away from our own door steps you can enjoy a long weekend experiencing different cultures and broaden your travel horizons. What’s even better news is Euro Star have reduced their prices, which makes getting to European cities even cheaper than before – of course you can still drive and travel via plane.

We all want something different from our holidays, so here are a few destinations where you can enjoy an affordable city break in Europe
Austria
Austria has a lot to offer for a city break with great food, people and sightseeing opportunities. You can also visit or even stay in its Capital City of Vienna, which is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and sits on the banks of the River Danube. Enjoy a coffee with mouth watering cake as you watch the world go by and get some well deserved “me time”. Vienna is an impressive location steeped in history with buildings such as Schobrunn Palace, National History Museum, Viennese Opera House and many more.

You also have the option of staying in Salzburg which again is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits on the Salzach River. Being the birthplace of Mozart the city has a lively atmosphere and a love of all things musical. If you visit during the summer months then you will be able to attend a range of events and concerts through-out this season – perfect for sipping on a nice cool beverage enjoying yourself with no distraction from daily life.
Italy
In my personal opinion, Italy is one the most beautiful countries I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. The food, people, towns and passion for their family is simply refreshing and wonderful to see – even more so if you can be a part of it. With many friends originating from Italy, regular trips out there is nothing unusual and it is always worth it – especially when you have home-made lemonade and parma ham, mozzarella and octopus salad waiting for you! We nearly always visit Verona, which when you land at the airport doesn’t look like much, but after a quick drive (about 10 minutes) the landscape and weather take over your senses. Verona is relaxed and very friendly with pink marbled buildings surrounding their historical Roman city.

An alternative but equally beautiful Italian city Venice also known as the floating city, offers cultural experiences that will make your city break a delightful one. This is also one of the go to places for pizza which is available in every restaurant, street sidewalk and each slice is delicious – that alone is enough to leave the UK for a weekend.
Poland

When I have mentioned Poland before as a great spot for a city break, I have had some confused faces, but after explaining and showing various photos they all understood my reasons why. Firstly we stayed in Krakow which is an old town which is made up of Baroque architecture with many of the buildings – must like Austria – being protected by UNESCO. There is a vast array of culture and the buzz of city life like no other, this is most definitely a city hot spot to add to your holiday list.
So when deciding where to go for a quick city break or a relaxing week away, be sure to review the above city locations, which really will leave you overwhelmed with the cultural experience, full of mouthwatering food and the appreciation for the history which made our neighboring countries
I’m glad you mention the train it sometimes gets bad press. If you book well in advance train tickets can compare well with flying and it’s city to city rather than potentially a regional airport out in the sticks. Eurostar can be fairly cheap in advance but consider further afield as well…;
I’ve written a post on how to get to Europe’s most popular destinations by train, which I hope will prove useful to you and some of your readers!

Euro Star used to be extremely expensive so it’s great to see them reduce their prices and allow more last minute tickets within a 1 hour departure time – perfect for spontaneous travelers. We have so many wonderful destinations hidden in Europe and for those who don’t drive and don’t wish to be stuck on a coach, the train is the fastest (and now affordable) option to take.
