Hitting the slopes of the first time can be a daunting prospect for even the most adventurous of travellers. Here are five of the best resorts across the continent and beyond for those making their first foray into the world of skiing.

For those who are experiencing more than a little trepidation about their impending trip, taking out winter sports travel insurance and turning to seasoned skiers for tips and pointers should help to allay your fears.

    1. Tignes, France

For Brits France is but a hop, skip away, making it the perfect holiday destination for Brits in search of a holiday in the snow or sun. Head to the popular resort of Tignes to sample its wide range of slopes, ranging from nursery and intermediate to expert slopes.

For female skiers who want to test out their moves without being subject to male bravado on the slopes, there are also women-only ski classes.

    1. Lech, Austria

Set in a quaint picturesque village, this alpine village is as stunning as it is practical when it comes to beginner skiers.

The area boasts a number of well regarded ski runs, where new skiers can hone their skills. The resort also has a number of ski runs for more advanced skiers, so is the perfect location for those travelling in a group that contains skiers of all ability ranges.

    1. Poiana Brasov, Romania

New skiers who want to develop their prowess on the slopes without breaking the bank, could do worse than heading to Poiana Brasov.

The resort has two nursery areas staffed by helpful instructors, and the area also has plenty of off-piste activities to indulge in, such as a visit to Dracula’s castle.

    1. Cortina, Italy

The Italians are famed for their warmth and hospitality, and this Mediterranean charm is evident at Cortina. The resort has a number of well-maintained beginner slopes in the Socrapes area. The resort also has instructors that well with children; perfect for keeping the little ones occupied.

    1. Killington, US

Killington has a great set up for new skiers. Those who are prepared to go across the pond for their first skiing fix, will find a Discovery Centre for beginner skiers, demonstrating how equipment works, with film giving you a chance to see it all in action before you have a go for yourself. The resort also has a number of large nursery slopes
