    Guernsey, An Outdoor Retreat

Guernsey is a small island located in the English Channel between England and France. At only 30 square miles Guernsey has a quaint and unique feel to it.  With its mild climate, holidaymakers can enjoy the great outdoors, with beautiful beaches and cliff paths, eating al fresco and island hopping to neighboring Bailiwick islands. Guernsey is part of the southernmost part in the British Isles. As a result it enjoys more sunshine hours each year allowing you to make full use of the outdoors and natural surroundings.

So just what can you do on outdoor holidays in Guernsey? Here is our list of ideas:

Walking is one of the best ways to get a true feel for Guernsey’s natural beauty. The spectacular south coast cliffs are interrupted with secluded coves, beautiful bays and ancient harbors. As well as admiring the stunning scenery you will come across granite watch towers, lookouts and gun emplacements, all relics of times past.

    The Countryside

The Countryside in Guernsey plays host to a number of visitor attractions, including the German Occupation Museum and The Little Chapel.  The reservoir also offers a picturesque retreat from everyday life, take a walk round on a beautiful sunny day and admire the wide range of flora and fauna throughout the area.

It is not just at these specific locations that you can enjoy great outdoor holidays. Ramble down any of the islands many Rouettes Tranquilles and you will feel as if you have stepped into a different world. These roads give priority to walkers, cyclists and horse riders making them distinctly peaceful and easy for you to enjoy and soak up the surroundings.

    The Beaches

Guernsey has a total of 27 beaches spread around the coast that range from secluded and sheltered bays in the south to wide and vast sandy beaches in the north and west. As well as the beaches on Guernsey neighboring Islands of Sark, Herm and Alderney all offer great beaches, with no island more than a 50 minute boat trip away.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is home to more than just the one island. There is also Herm & Sark that can both by accessed by boat, as well as Alderney which is only a 15 minute flight away. Each island offers something distinctly different. Herm is an island of calm in an increasingly hectic world. Award winning gardens, breath taking sandy beaches that look plucked our the Caribbean and tranquil walking paths – Herm offers a rural retreat like no other.

Traffic free Sark offers costal views and a picturesque rural interior. With no cars, the 600 residents get around by bicycle or horse and carriage, this has a dramatic effect on the pace of life and overall feel of the island. Visiting Sark really is like stepping back in time. The island has managed to retain a sedate and laid back feel while introducing some luxury in its hotels and restaurants.

At three miles long by one and a half miles wide Alderney is small, friendly and relaxed with its own charming identity.  Beautiful beaches are the main attraction in Alderney, or if you are looking for something a tad different then go for Alderney Week. This is a week of fun, family activities and partying – something not to be missed.

So there we have it, our top suggestions for a relaxed outdoor holiday in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. More information can be found on getting to Guernsey, however being only a short flight from many UK airports it could not be easier. Visiting Guernsey is something that you will no forget!
