    1. Global Learning Semesters
When looking for a study abroad program, making your starting point one of the largest and most respected schemes is a good idea. Global Learning Semesters offer students from America an opportunity to study abroad for a semester or a year. They offer a wide variety of courses and locations of study, and specialize in thematic multi-country programs, such as the European Semester, where students will travel to up to 12 different countries. During the student’s time there, they will integrate into the local communities and are provided with trips across the countries so that they can experience all of what is on offer. Each year, Global Learning Semesters offers 40 courses hosted by nine universities: University of Nicosia (Cyprus), University of Paris IV, Catholic University of Paris, American Business School (Paris), Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, University of Belgrano (Buenos Aires), Florence University of the Arts, Santa Reparata International School of Art (Florence), University of Westminster (London), University of Buenos Aires, Beijing Normal University, and the University of International Business and Economics (Beijing).

    2. Up With People
Travel with Purpose, perform for thousands, impact communities is the tagline for the Up With People (UWP) organisation. This study abroad scheme differs from other purely academic schemes by offering students the chance to visit several countries, hone their performance arts and musical skills whilst serving the communities they are in and gain academic credits at the same time. Florida Southern College (FSC) is the academic institution behind the study program and it allows students to gain up to 12 college credits whilst they are abroad. Each student can take up to three 4-credit courses, which can then be used to continue study at FSC or transcripts are available to transfer the credits to other institutions. Hawaii Pacific University, Carroll University, Wisconsin and Western New England University, Massachusetts are also affiliates of the program and it is possible for their students to gain credits through UWP. Because UWP is based on performance and music, you must be competent and confident in these areas, although no audition or previous experience is required.

    3. CISabroad
With 19 different countries to choose from, plus multi-country programs, CISabroad offer a wide range of study programs to suit any needs. The CISabroad mission statement sets out that it aims to broaden academic horizons, promote global awareness and create global citizens. No matter what your subject of choice, CISabroad offers courses across all fields of study, as well as international internships and the opportunity to study your Major. As with all study abroad schemes, they offer the chance to experience the subject you are studying, whether it is Spanish in Spain or medical studies on the ground in South Africa. There is nothing like immersing yourself in the culture to help you with your studies.

    4. Semester at Sea
If you are looking for a truly unique experience that could see you travelling around the world, being taught by world-class professors and meeting international dignitaries and experts then look no further than Semester at Sea. Run as part of the University of Virginia, these courses run on cruise liners converted into campuses. As long as you don’t get seasick and have a passion for travel, then it could be just the scheme for you. Far from being a limited program, 77 different courses are available covering all areas of study from music to architecture to business and biology. There are on land Field Labs as well as excursions so that you can experience the countries that you dock in. Where the ship sails to is sometimes connected to the subjects being studied, such as a Mediterranean cruise if studying Classical Literature.
