    South Australia: Bird Watching Paradise

    South Australia is renowned for its beautiful weather, wide variety of activities and wildlife. The region is packed full of adventure, offering the more daring of tourists the chance to go caving, climbing, cycling, shark cage diving or even skydiving. However for the more romantic holidays South Australia has some of the most stunning locations for the perfect couples retreat. From visiting the Barossa Valley’s vineyards to sleeping under the stars, the region offers as much for a relaxing vacation as it does for the adrenaline junkies.

    Of course aside from the activities on offer, South Australia plays host to an abundance of wildlife. From the giant pandas at Adelaide Zoo to the kangaroos and koalas roaming free on Kangaroo Island, this part of the world is a must-see to catch a glimpse of such a wide variety of animals. As such visiting this area isn’t just for couples or adventurous travellers; the wealth of wildlife makes South Australia a great place for families to visit. The kids will love learning about all the different types of animals, and places like Kangaroo Island allow you to get up close to the friendly kangaroos and koalas that call the region their home.

    One thing that must not be overlooked however is the birdlife present in this region. South Australia’s climate and diverse habitats allow over 400 species of bird to reside in this area, encompassing a range of small, large and exotic birds. The vast amount of coastline present accommodates a wide variety of seabirds, where species such as the Caspian Tern and Hooded Plover can be spotted. Kangaroo Island in particular is a great location for bird watching, where white-bellied sea eagles, pelicans and even little penguins can be seen.

    In addition to wildlife attractions such as Adelaide Zoo and Cleland Wildlife Park, you must visit some of South Australia’s national parks and reserves. Most notable include Coorong National Park and Gluepot Reserve, both of which are home to a whole host of birdlife, from Cormorants to Black-eared Miners. Rare and endangered species, such as the Glossy Black Cockatoo can also be found in South Australia, making it a paradise for bird watchers.

    The diverse birdlife in South Australia really gives the region that something extra from other destinations, and makes your trip there even better. For some keen bird watchers, it’s the main reason to visit; however for the majority of tourists it’s the icing on the cake of a great holiday that really does have it all: sun, sea, tranquillity, wildlife and excitement. South Australia can really surprise you with what it has to offer, and you may find a new passion in bird watching if you give it a try. So before planning your next trip away, consider somewhere that has an abundance of wildlife, and unleash the photographer inside you – you’ll be able to snap some great shots of some of the world’s most rare (and of course cute) creatures.
