What comes to your mind when you think of India? Rajahs, palaces, chaos, wildlife, temples, mosques, Sadhus..what? These are all vivid images by their own rights. The attraction of India as a travel destination cannot be explained in words actually. This ancient land has a mysterious charm despite all the factors that go against it. People travel to India from different corners of the world, in the hope to discover this mysterious charm for themselves.
The wildlife of India has a special place in the minds of the travelers. There are actually quite a few jungle safaris in India where you can discover the thrill of seeing a tiger, a lion, elephants or a rhino in the wild.
So, presented here is a list of safari destinations in India.
-
Bandhavgarh: The Bandhavgarh tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh is probably the best chance for a visitor to see a wild tiger. You spend a couple of days here and you are almost certain to see the King of the Jungle in the wild. The Tala village, by the side of the main gate of the park has accommodation facilities to suit all budgets. You can also go for a safari in elephant back at this tiger reserve, which is definitely recommended as an unforgettable experience.
-
Kanha: Again in Madhya Pradesh, the Kanha tiger reserve is an experience that you will not forget easily. It’s a vast and dense forest with a considerably huge core area surrounded by an equally big buffer zone. You can go to really deep forest here, which makes it a better destination than Bandhavgarh. The chances of seeing a tiger is slimmer than in Bandhavgarh, but still it is quite a good destination to visit if you want to experience the mystery of the Indian jungles.
-
Sundarbans: The Sundarban tiger reserve is a unique experience as no jeeps are allowed here. You travel by canoes into the dense forest. The forest is very dense and still largely inaccessible for tourists. This reserve has in fact a huge number of Royal Bengal tigers, almost 200 in number. You can reach sunderban from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.
-
Corbett National park: This national park in the state of Uttarakhand is named after the legendary hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett. It’s actually the oldest tiger park in India, established in 1936. Chances of seeing a wild tiger is very slim given the huge area the forest covers, but travelling to the National Park is a fulfilling experience. You can also see wild elephants in this safari.
-
Sasan Gir wildlife sanctuary: This sanctuary in Gujarat is not famous for tigers, but for the Indian Lion. This is the last remaining habitat of wild Asiatic lion. Chances of seeing a lion here are quite good and if you spend a couple of days, you may just as well be lucky to see the King (and Queen) of this jungle.
-
Pench: This tiger reserve is again in Madhya Pradesh. The forest is less often visited by tourists, so you can enjoy your own forest privacy in here. There are quite a few tigers here, and you can spot one if you are planning to stay for a day or two. Elephant rides are also available.
These are the major jungle safaris in India. While traveling to jungle safaris in India, you should definitely remember to follow the rules of the jungle. Respecting the privacy of wild animals, not littering garbage in the forest, etc. are some of the simple rules that you should be observing.
