Tips to Enjoy the Bioluminescent Bay of Vieques

Are you planning to go to Puerto Rico for the holidays? That is always an excellent plan. With all the beaches and stunning sceneries on the island, you’re sure to enjoy your trip.

Now, if you want to explore Puerto Rico even more, one place you can visit is Vieques, located off the eastern coast of the main island. With a population of over 9,000 people, this Caribbean isle offers fun activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and biking tours.

But what makes Vieques island a popular destination for tourists is the boat tours around its bioluminescent bay. The Vieques bioluminescent bay or otherwise known as Mosquito bay is a stunning body of water filled with organisms that glow like magic.

A bioluminescent bay is a bay with single-celled microorganisms called dinoflagellates, causing the water to have a bluish glow.

The high volume of dinoflagellates in one area is so rare that there are only five bays in the world that has this bioluminescence, one being on Vieques island.

How do I get to Vieques?

You need to book a kayak tour around the place. But for you to go to the Vieques bioluminescent bay, you can either take a plane or a ferry.

The island is a short 25-minute flight from San Juan International Airport or San Juan’s Isla Grande Airport. If you book your trip in advance, you will have better chances of getting cheaper tickets.

You can also go on a ferry from Fajardo or Ceiba, which is an hour and a half drive from San Juan. But the travel time on a ship is 45 minutes and a lot cheaper than planes.

How do I get the best bay tour?

To ensure that you get the best bioluminescent tour in Vieques, ensure to get the date and time that you want. Sites like thebiobay.com offer kayaking tours in Mosquito bay for you to enjoy.

Ideally, try to book a time that is set later at night to ensure that it’s dark when you take your tour. Doing so would let the bay have its full glow, and you will see it in its full glory.

In addition to this, avoid flying in around days where there is a full moon. Most tours in Vieques do not have any schedule the night before, the night of, and the night after a full moon.

Things to do while on the tour

The best part of the trip is that you can have fun and play with the light in the water. Although you’re not permitted to swim in the bay, there are still other tricks you can try. Here are some activities that you can do:

  • Try to paddle your kayak as fast as you can. Ensure to keep your eyes on the water.

  • Place your hand in the water and spread your fingers.

  • Place your fingers in the water and paddle your kayak fast.

  • Wet your hands then blow on it to get the water to spray off.

  • While staying still, put your oar in the water and gently move it around.

  • If you can, bring a squirt bottle and spray it to the air.

When it comes to bioluminescence, the best one you will see is in the Mosquito Bay, as it is known to have the brightest glow out of all five. So, while you are there, make sure you enjoy and try to make the best out of your time. After all, it’s not every day that you see a glowing body of water.
