When it comes to film and TV, there are few more iconic settings than America, and for most of us not living in the USA, it’s through film and TV that we know what we know about this huge country.
So what better way to discover America than through your favourite TV shows? As HBO have produced some of the best American-based shows in recent years, there’s no where better to begin.
New York
If you’re talking about iconic film and TV locations, there are none more impressive than the Big Apple itself. Home to the glamorous Sex and the City, and now the slightly less glamorous – but possibly more charming – Girls, New York is a great place to begin your American TV and film odyssey, especially as every street that you walk down or diner you eat in makes you feel like you’re in the movies too.
New Jersey
Few had really thought much about New Jersey until The Sopranos came along, but now the state is inextricably entwined with images of the mafia and mob culture.
Though this may seem a strange reason to put it on your ‘must see’ list, the rich history of the local crime families gives the region an air of mystery. You can see all the main sights feature in the show by taking a four-hour guided tour of the area, just remember not to upset anyone on the way!
Atlantic City
Ok, well this one might strictly speaking be in New Jersey as well, but Atlantic City has a look and feel all of its own, so deserves a few dedicated days during your visit.
As the home of Boardwalk Empire, an HBO drama set during the prohibition era, Atlantic City has taken on a whole new persona, with tourists flocking here to get a glimpse of the world beneath the broad walk.
Baltimore
There have been few more influential TV shows in recent years than The Wire. And though it may not make you want to visit Baltimore in a hurry, it does offer a certain brutal allure that’s difficult to resist. If you’re feeling brave, there is a self-guided tour you can take part in, just remember to keep an eye out for Omar or Stringer Bell!
TV series are a great way to get to know a city, so next time you’re stateside why not visit the home of your favourite show?
