    Travelling with diabetes

Holidays are designed to be fun. A vacation from regular, day-to-day life and a chance to let your hair down and relax. But even on holiday, it’s important to ensure you stay healthy. People have a tendency to indulge themselves when they’re away, but that doesn’t mean you need to be irresponsible. You can still have a good time while staying safe.

    Make your condition clear

When you are at home, you’re usually surrounded by your friends, family or work colleagues, all of whom should already be aware that you have diabetes. But when you are on holiday, there is a higher chance that you will find yourself around people you have never met before, particularly if you are going backpacking. In these circumstances, it is more important than ever that you make your condition clear to people. That doesn’t mean you have to announce it to everyone you meet, but take steps to ensure people know what to do should anything happen to you.

Wearing a necklace or bracelet that states you are a diabetic can save your life in the case of an emergency. If you become unconscious, it will allow anybody giving you medical treatment to be aware of your condition so they can administer the right medication. It’s also worth carrying a card around in your wallet that shows you are diabetic. The clearer you make it, the more time you could potentially save in the event of an emergency.

    Ensure you’re coveredTravelling with diabetes

Some insurance policies have restrictions so you should ensure you read through all of the terms and conditions before you purchase anything. It may be worthwhile investing in travel insurance with a firm who specialise in cover for diabetics. Having a prior understanding of the condition can make it easier when establishing any restrictions and working out premiums. It also means that in the event of having to make a claim, you can be assured that the people you speak to will already be aware of the condition and could make the claim process that little bit faster.

The downside to just buying any travel insurance because it’s the cheapest is that you may not actually be covered if you’re diabetic. If you don’t check before you head off on your travels, you may find yourself with a very expensive medical bill later on. Obviously, no one wants to actually have to claim on their travel insurance but it’s important to cover yourself and prepare for the unexpected. It may save you a fortune in the event of an accident or if you need medical attention of some kind.

If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, it may be worth going to visit your GP before you travel. They can advise if there are any restrictions to where you can travel and also ensure you have enough of your medication to last the full length of your trip. It can be useful just to get some more general information and put your mind at rest before your holiday.
