As a self-confessed intrepid explorer, I was really excited to find out about the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalucia. I’d always thought it was about beaches and typical touristy resorts, but that’s really not the case. There are actually some great mountains waiting to be explored less than 60km from Malaga Airport, so I’ve been doing some research on what I can get up to when I’m there.
Skiing
Firstly, skiing is a popular activity in the Sierra Nevada, and is Europe’s southernmost ski resort. It’s hard to imagine how somewhere in Andalucia can be ski-friendly, but it’s actually home to Mulhacen, Spain’s highest continental point. The ski season can last from November to May, but winter is the prime time for skiing in the area. The resort can be accessed by road from Malaga or Granada, and resort villages sit at the bottom of the pistes. There are more than 100km of alpine ski runs, with other snowy activities including toboganning, ice bikes and ice skating in the Mirlo Blanco recreation zone.

Hiking
During the summer months, hiking is an extremely popular activity in the Sierra Nevada range. You can either choose to make your way up as far as you can yourself or take the cable cars or chair lift to the summit to explore further from mainland Spain’s highest point. On clear, bright days, it is possible to glimpse Africa from this stunning viewpoint. There are also hikers’ cabins available if you wish to stay on the mountain overnight.

Riding
Horse riding and cycling are both possible on the mountains. There are several horse riding schools in the range where guides will lead you along special horse trails through the region, allowing you to see the spectacular mountainous vistas from horseback. This is a good way to improve your riding skills whilst also seeing more of the sights and enjoying the cool breeze. There are also many places from which you can rent a bike to go mountain biking in gorgeous surroundings, and you can pick a route to make your ride as chilled or challenging as you like.

Education
Guided tours are available to teach you more about the geology, flora and fauna of the area for a spot of learning on location. It is also a prime location for birdwatching. In an area of such incredible geology, there is a lot to be learnt here!
