Mexico is one of those countries which thousands of people have looked at, considered visiting but very often the negative headlines which seem to follow the country have put many people off. However, the Mexico we see today is very different to that of 20 years ago, 10 years ago or even just a few years ago, the government is more proactive than ever before and visitor numbers are rising again.
The image of Mexico
Moving to Mexico has become a reality for thousands of expats around the world and even just the quickest of glimpses into this particular area of discussion will cast a very different light on Mexico itself. There is no doubt that crime, drugs and corruption have been rife in years gone by but there is also no doubt that the Mexican authorities have made major progress in recent times.
Unfortunately it is the image of Mexico, often created by the worldwide press, which overshadows the many positives you will experience upon visiting the country. So what does Mexico have to offer?
Economic expansion
The Mexican economy is one of the strongest in Latin America and like so many in the region it has remained relatively stable even during the ongoing worldwide economic downturn. It seems as though international companies are expanding their operations in Mexico on a regular basis with daily headlines confirming this fact. These are some of the best-known automotive companies in the world, drug companies, IT companies and an array of other leaders in their field.
Economic expansion in Mexico has also increased consumer spending in the region which has led to attractive business opportunities, improved tourist facilities and a reputation amongst the tourist trade which continues to strengthen month by month.
Culture and beauty
Whether you are looking to stray away from the beaten track of Mexico and experience some of the rural delights of the country or quite happy to checkout cities such as Mexico City, there is more than enough to do. Culturally there are few countries in the world which can match Mexico, from a beautiful scenery point of view this is one of the most breathtaking countries in the world and when you also take into account the plants, animals and different cultures, a trip down Mexico way is certainly worth considering.
It is the ability to maintain the historic culture of the country while also incorporating some of the modern day trends which allows Mexico to appeal to more than one group of tourists and one group of expats. This multi-pronged approach to improving the country’s image has certainly paid dividends and improved the country’s standing on the worldwide stage.
Politics
Historically Latin America and South America have been political volcanoes with passions often running high as well as accusations of corruption and political interference. Thankfully there have been major changes within the Mexican political system over the last decade and the financial strategy of the current government is more focused than ever before, the country’s finances have improved dramatically and corruption and bribery have certainly been reduced within political and government circles. There is still much work to be done with regards to the Mexican political system, expanding the economy and bringing millions of people out of the poverty trap, but there is no doubt that progress has been made.
Is Mexico worth a visit?
When you take into account recent government programs against drug cartels, street gangs and crime in general, not to mention a more focused approach to the economy, there is no doubt that Mexico has a better standing today than it has had for many years. Slowly but surely the stigma of the historic image is lifting and, while there is still much work to be done, the government deserves praise for what has been done so far.
Whether you are looking to check out the delights of rural Mexico, visit the cultural hotspots or relax in some of the luxurious coastal resorts, there is certainly more than enough to do to fill your time. You will come away with a very different image to that portrayed by many of the worldwide media which is perhaps one of the main reasons why more expats than ever before are now looking to move to Mexico.
