American Civil War Sites in Pennsylvania

The commonwealth of Pennsylvania was center stage in the Civil War and was a huge contributor to the Union effort. Soldiers from this area alone exceeded 360,000 who offered their lives to the federal movement. Military manpower aside, large donations of equipment and artillery guns were also provided by the people of Pennsylvania. Additionally, large contributions of food and other resources served the cause.

The preservation, restoration and redevelopment of the sites, landmarks, museums, cemeteries, encampments and trails has been a steady effort and has drawn significant resources to the state. Several locations ache for needed resources. Resources are the lifeblood of the preservation and restoration of Civil War sites and locations. Historically significant locations offer much toward understanding and remembrance of the Civil War.

Military cemeteries are poised to honor the contributions of these great soldiers and leaders. Several headstones located in many of these cemeteries, like Charters Cemetery in Carnegie, need replacement or restoration. These key cemeteries serve as the final resting place for Civil War and WW I veterans. The headstones are illegible, damaged, leaning or otherwise compromised. The importance of these preservation efforts cannot be overstated. This preservation helps maintain the memories of how these soldiers fought in the Civil War

    Preserving History Enlightens the Future

The National Park Service is recognized as a dedicated ambassador in maintaining the various Civil War sites in Pennsylvania. The NPS manages many parks and sites preserving the history of the Civil War. You can visit any of the NPS managed locations, and you will find sections of any location that would benefit from some form of beautification. Maintaining these sites requires daily effort assuring that the Civil War will keep its place in history.

The Gettysburg location takes care of thousands of visitors each year. The site is suitable for seniors, teenagers, and toddlers alike. Gettysburg played host to one of the bloodiest and most influential battles of the Civil War. The effort at Gettysburg by the Union forces was as hard fought and desperate as any battle in the war.

Take a look at Eisenhower Park managed by the NPS, and you will see many areas that show a special appeal. This park is situated on the site of the home and farm of General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  This park is located adjacent to the Gettysburg battle ground site. The park manages thousands of visitors each year and hosts several authentic recreations of various events of the Civil War period. You will find most of the park in great shape; however, some sections require restoration effort.

Civil War Encampment and Trail Preservation Efforts

The small area of Chambersburg endured many hard fought and destructive battles. The area hosted some significant meetings in history. In one such meeting, General Lee was reported to have had key appointments in Chambersburg. Shortly thereafter he headed toward Gettysburg. The town square of Chambersburg is a significant site for the war and is well maintained. However, some areas of the township require refurbishing to assure maintenance of the notable memorabilia in this township.

The York area has the Historical Society Museum & Library/Archives. Wrightsville has the Civil War Diorama. These noted areas are memorable partly because, one wing of Robert E. Lee’s army occupied York prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. This site gets numerous visitors and has plans to improve the preservation of this historic site.

You will find these sites in good condition for the most part. Keep in mind, thousands of visitors spend hours at these locations and some areas need extra restoration.
