The Shard is London’s newest and largest skyscraper. Standing at 310 metres, it’s the tallest building in the EU, and this vast tower, designed by architect Renzo Piano, has already become a symbol of the city.
Work on The Shard began in March 2009 and it was inaugurated in July 2012, but it was not until February 2013 that it was opened to the public. Inside, the big attraction is the viewing gallery, which is the highest public viewing gallery in London. Over two million people are expected to visit The Shard each year and if you want to be one of them, then here is a quick guide to what to expect.
The Viewing Gallery
There are actually three viewing galleries in The Shard, and they are located on the 68th, 69th and72nd floors. At nearly twice the height of any other public viewing platform in London, you can guarantee that it is going to be something special.
On the 69th floor you will be able to enjoy a 360-degree view, which stretches out for 40 miles into the distance, along with various multimedia displays. You can go one better and head up to the 72nd floor for the highest view of all, where you can look up at the glass that makes up the top of the building. You’ll also be able to use the digital telescopes, which include information about the key locations that you can see from the platform.
Arranging Your Trip to The Shard
Arranging a trip to The Shard is easy. It is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., so you can see the view either during the day, or at night (sunset on a clear day will be particularly stunning). You can buy tickets on the day if you want to, but they cost more and it is recommended that you buy your tickets early by booking online. Also be aware that you can book up to four months in advance.
The price at the time of writing is £24.95 for adults when booked online and £29.95 if you buy your ticket on the day. Children from 4 to 15 pay £18.95 online or £23.95 on the day, and there are discounts for disabled visitors.
The Shard is very easy to find because it is located next to London Bridge Station. Book your stay in one of the many cheap London hotels located nearby and you will be able to walk to it with ease. Alternatively, take the Underground on the Northern Line or the Jubilee Line, or catch the train to the station. It is also a short walk from other major attractions, such as Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern.
There are no time restrictions when you arrive, so you can take as much time as you want to take in the views. You should also be aware that you cannot take large rucksacks or bags with you.
See the Best View in Town
The Shard is set to become one of the most important tourist attractions in London, so book your trip here as soon as you can. Hopefully you will get lucky and enjoy a clear day, but come rain or shine the view will still be spectacular, so check it out for yourself next time you are in London.
